A Rich Source of Essential Fatty Acids
Ground Flaxseed (aka Linseed or Flax Seed) and Flaxseed Oil (aka Linseed Oil or Flax Seed Oil) are derived from the seeds of the Flax plant (Linum usitatissimum). Flaxseed (Linseed) helps supply nutrients that contribute to the well being of the body. Flaxseed is also a natural source of Omega-3 fatty acids and provides the most concentrated vegetarian plant source of Omega-3 fatty acids found in nature.** Fatty acids play a role in providing an energy source for the body.** Flaxseed Oil (Linseed Oil) is also naturally rich in heart healthy nutrients.**
Flaxseed may pass through your system undigested unless the Flax Seed is ground or provided in oil (Flaxseed Oil / Linseed Oil). Flaxseed Oil is similar to most vegetable oils in that it contains Linoleic Acid, an essential fatty acid needed by the body.** Flaxseed Oil differs from most oils though, in that Flaxseed Oil contains significant amounts of another essential fatty acid,Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA). Since neither Alpha Linolenic Acid nor Linoleic Acid can be made by the body, they must be obtained through diet.
Support for Cholesterol Levels
The effect on cholesterol of a Flaxseed supplement (15g of ground Flaxseed) was studied in 15 subjects on long-term intake (800 IU/day) of vitamin E1. Total blood cholesterol and LDL levels were supported by the Flaxseed supplement; HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol did not change during Flaxseed consumption. Healthy blood flow was also supported in the subjects taking the Flaxseed supplement.
Additional studies have shown that phytoestrogens may promote bone and cardiovascular health, in part by supporting healthy cholesterol levels already within the normal range. The effects of Flaxseed, a rich source of the phytoestrogens called lignans, were studied on cholesterol metabolism and cardiovasuclar health in women2. This study showed that Flaxseeds can support heart health through maintenance of healthy cholesterol levels.
